Memorial Day

We had a fun Memorial Day. There was a lot of family and food involved. Even though we only stopped by one grave I did think about my own and Spencer's grandfathers who served in both World War I and World War II. I know just a little about the actual details of each of my grandfather's experiences in the wars, and as I write about this I wish that I knew more about their experiences.

Yesterday my dad gave us an American flag, but unfortunately we haven't put it up because we don't have a flag pole or anything else to put it on. Between Spencer's family's breakfast this morning, my family's Bar-B-Que this afternoon and a birthday party for our grandma in the evening we didn't have time to get something to post our flag in. But soon, very soon we will be proud to be flying our American flag. In the mean time I will just post this picture on our blog. I figure it is the least we can do to show our gratitude.

Not a Moment Too Soon!

Spencer and I just closed on our first home, and it wasn't a moment too soon since we were going to be moving in this weekend regardless. We had to move out of our apartment we were renting at the beginning of May and have been staying in our aunt and uncles home who are currently on a mission, but we were feeling that if we didn't leave soon, that we would wear out our welcome (No one likes a welcome wearer outer). So, last Monday when we heard that our closing date was being pushed back once again, the owners of the home said we could go ahead and move in this weekend even though technically we are supposed to own the home first.

So here we are, surrounded with boxes and ready to move into our brand new, first home. We love the house. We are surprised by the fact that we are buying a home. We were really liking the set up that we had with our apartment and weren't planning on buying until next Spring, but you know, Heavenly Father has a way of changing our plans for us (this time around we are grateful for the change in plans). I randomly came across the house on the Internet one day and e-mailed a picture of it to Spence at his work. The title of the e-mail was "Just For Fun". That night I asked Spence if he would be opposed to going to see the house the next day "just for fun". I thought he wouldn't be up for it because it might mess up his golfing plans, but he was surprisingly willing to re-arrange his plans to go see the house. To make a long story short, we loved the house. We were the first people to make an offer which turned out to be very lucky. Our offer was very low, but was accepted within two days because of the current market. Once the home was under contract there were multiple offers that came in that were for more money. Luckily the owners honored their original acceptance and we started making plans to purchase the house.

As you can see from the picture below, the yard needs to be put in. There is a little touch up painting on the outside and the inside that needs to be finished, and we need to put in more shelving in the pantry area. Other than that, the home is beautiful and we are very excited to have it.

I am especially excited to have neighbors. Currently we are surrounded by sheep and cows. I like animals, but I like people more. It will be nice to walk outside and have the potential of running into someone that I can have a conversation with. There are a lot of young families with young children in the neighborhood. Madelyn will have plenty of friends to play with. It will be nice to know we are somewhere where we can raise our family if we want.

Anyway, we are excited to have work to do around our house. It should be fun and we will keep you posted on the happenings around the house.
